This painting features an Alutiiq Sugpiaq or Aleut/Unangan girl dancing in full regalia on the beach on a sunny day. Aluet and Alutiiq clothing was often made from puffin skins and feathers; they were reversible garments and required 40-60 puffins. These skilled artisans also used sea otter, seal, and other mammals to fashion their clothing. Dance was and still is an important part of Alaska Native culture.
