5x7 Dancing with the Wind
5x7 Dancing with the Wind
This painting features girls dressed in regalia with drummers in the background. They are dancing on the beach on a stormy, gray day. Alutiiq Sugpiaq or Aleut/Unangan clothing was often made from puffin skins and feathers; they were reversible garments and required 40-60 puffins. These skilled artisans also used sea otter, seal, and other mammals to fashion their clothing. Dance was and still is an important part of Alaska Native culture.
Archival quality giclee prints of original oil paintings, signed by artist Rhonda Shelford Jansen. Her paintings that are inspired by her years in Homer, Kodiak, and Dutch Harbor and her family's lineage in the Alaskan commercial fishing industry. Her Aleut (Unangan) heritage and her love for history are the foundation for her Native work. She specializes in oils, acrtylic, and watercolor—creating soft, natural scenes with rugged coastlines, waves, and mountains.
