This painting features an elder is teaching a girl how to weave baskets using rye grass. They are surrounded by the beauty of Alaska including fireweed, spruce trees, and soaring mountains. Weaving was essential to early Alutiiq culture; women used grass, spruce roots, birch bark, baleen, and animals sinew to produce baskets for collecting and storing, sleeping mats, fishing nets, clothing, and more.

Archival quality giclee prints of original oil paintings, signed by artist Rhonda Shelford Jansen. Her paintings that are inspired by her years in Homer, Kodiak, and Dutch Harbor and her family's lineage in the Alaskan commercial fishing industry.
