RSJ $45 Quiet Night 8x10

RSJ $45 Quiet Night 8x10

This painting depicts the Northern Lights dancing above the mountains while kayakers in traditional skin kayaks/baidarkas, traditional hats and visors, and gut skin parkas paddle home. Both Aleut/Unangan and Alutiiq/Sugpiaq men used kayaks to hunt. They had a driftwood or wood frame and were stretched with sea mammal skin. They used patch kits on-board to stop leaks and it was written that the Aleuts reached speeds of 7 knots and braved storms and waves.

Archival quality giclee prints of original oil paintings, signed by artist Rhonda Shelford Jansen. Her paintings that are inspired by her years in Homer, Kodiak, and Dutch Harbor and her family's lineage in the Alaskan commercial fishing industry. Her Aleut (Unangan) heritage and her love for history are the foundation for her Native work. She specializes in oils, acrtylic, and watercolor—creating soft, natural scenes with rugged coastlines, waves, and mountains.
